Warren
Warren, Rhode Island, is a town in Bristol County with a rich history and a vibrant community. Established in 1653, it was originally the site of the Pokanoket Indian settlement of Sowams, governed by Chief Massasoit. English colonists Edward Winslow and Stephen Hopkins first visited in 1621, leading to a trading post by 1632 on the Kickemuit River. Officially incorporated as Sowams in 1668, the town was renamed Warren in 1747 in honor of Admiral Sir Peter Warren. As of the 2020 census, Warren's population was 11,147. Notable landmarks include the Warren Town Common and Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum, and the town provides access to the scenic Warren River for boating and fishing. Warren was also the original home of Brown University, founded in 1764, and it thrived as a whaling port before shifting to textile manufacturing in the mid-19th century. Covering 8.6 square miles, Warren is situated on the east bank of the Warren River, opposite Barrington, making it a unique and inviting place to live and visit.
