Little Compton
Little Compton is a charming coastal town in Newport County, Rhode Island, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Sakonnet River. With a population of approximately 3,589, it nearly doubles during the summer due to tourism. Originally inhabited by the Sakonnet Indians, the town was settled by Europeans from Duxbury, Massachusetts, in the late 17th century. It was named after a town in Warwickshire, England, when it was incorporated in 1682. Notable local figures like Colonel Benjamin Church helped shape its early history.
Today, Little Compton is known for its beautiful beaches, including Sakonnet Point and South Shore Beach, offering swimming, surfing, and fishing opportunities. The Wilbor House, built in 1692, now serves as a historical museum.
