Charlestown
Charlestown is a town in Washington County, Rhode Island, with a population of approximately 7,997. Incorporated in 1738 and named after King Charles II, Charlestown was originally part of Westerly, with the area north of the Pawcatuck River becoming Richmond in 1747. The town covers 59.3 square miles, with 37.86% of it being water, including the scenic beaches and waterways. Charlestown borders Westerly to the west, Richmond to the north, Hopkinton to the northwest, and South Kingstown to the east. The village of Charlestown lies in the southeast, with Quonochontaug in the southwest and Carolina on the northern border. Notably, in 2011, Charlestown became the first U.S. municipality to pass a ban on electricity-generating wind turbines of any size or type.
